    Classes taught at SPACE 2B:
    Crystal Bowls and Gongs

    Background:

James’s sound healing journey began in dark, pulsing nightclubs and music festivals, where he intuitively discovered that music shared across thousands of human bodies could create transcendent healing experiences. A lifelong musician trained in classical violin and Chinese erhu—the former under the personal tutelage of Li Lin (Juilliard) for over a decade—he had been born with several forms of synesthesia, seeing colors and visions in response to sound, words, and numbers—so music reached him as something seen and felt, not just heard.

This gift drew him to explore the intersection of sound and healing more deeply: plant medicine ceremonies in the Amazon, silent Vipassana meditation in India, and a year of solitude living alone across Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Eventually, he arrived at SPACE2B. In the first session he attended, the vibrations from the teacher’s first strike of the Tibetan bowl sent him viscerally back into the Amazon rainforest, his body absorbing the sound waves as healing medicine. What he had always felt, he now understood: sound doesn’t just move air; it moves what’s inside us.

Today, James leads sessions that blend classical music theory with intuitive playing, using crystal bowls, the spoken voice, and other instruments. He holds space for participants to leave behind urban responsibilities and reconnect with the universal awareness and love that surrounds us and embraces us, always.

What first drew you to sound therapy, meditation, or contemplative practice?

I attended Wonderfruit festival in Thailand a few years ago and remember seeing a tent where a sound healer was inside playing crystal bowls to no less than fifty people lying around him in a circle, for hours on end. It was a mystical experience and I wanted to learn more.

Why does creating space for rest and awareness feel important today?

Many people I knew in urban centers are running nonstop without taking a chance to pause, slow down, and ask themselves: why? Rest and relaxation is often seen as a waste of time, but actually it’s the only state where our bodies can process what they’ve been holding and suppressing.

What do you invite participants to experience during your sessions?

I create environments that invite participants to return to awareness and empty space, so that the universal life energy around us can embrace us and begin its healing work. This often involves states of half sleep.

What does "a space to simply be" mean to you?

It means nobody is performing, even myself. There’s no judgment or expectations. Our bodies contain all the knowledge, wisdom, and experience we require. The most effective approach is to just… be. The sound from the crystal bowls will do the heavy lifting to help us access this state.

How do you cultivate moments of presence or rest in your daily life?

I keep an open calendar with few obligations. I try not to look at my phone on the MRT. I look closely at the plants around me when I walk by
